A building organised around the clubs you use most

The argument that started it

The studio began as a disagreement between two people who had spent years on opposite ends of a golf shop. One had been building clubs on a bench since the era when every hosel got a hacksaw and a hope. The other had come up on launch monitors and spreadsheets. They agreed on almost nothing except a single observation: the clubs that got the most attention in a fitting were the clubs that mattered least to a scorecard.

So they rented a narrow suite off Malabu Drive with a long, straight interior wall — the kind of space a putting surface needs and a driver bay does not — and inverted the order. Putter first. Wedges second. Everything else after.

The first year was slow. Players walked in expecting a screen and a radar gun and found themselves being asked to putt for forty minutes. Then the referrals started, and they came from an unexpected direction: teaching professionals who were tired of coaching around equipment that was fighting the student.

What independence actually means here

Plenty of shops call themselves independent. In practice that word can mean anything from genuinely brand-agnostic to holding four dealer agreements with volume targets attached. Ours is the narrow version:

• No component maker pays for placement on our wall or in our fitting carts.
• We hold no minimum purchase commitments with any head, shaft or grip supplier.
• Fitters are salaried. Nobody here earns more by recommending a more expensive build.
• If your existing club is already the right answer, the recommendation is to keep it.

That last point costs money and we have made peace with it. A meaningful share of sessions end with two adjustments and no purchase. Those players tend to come back with their whole family.

The measurement habit

Every number that leaves this building is written down and dated. The roll surface gets a stimp reading each Monday before the first appointment, and the reading is recorded whether or not it has moved. The loft and lie gauge is checked against a reference club monthly. The frequency meter gets zeroed at the start of every build day.

None of that is glamorous. It exists because a fitting is worthless if you cannot repeat it. When a player comes back three seasons later saying the irons feel different, we can look at the original card, remeasure, and tell them whether the clubs drifted or the swing did. Usually it is some of both, and it is useful to know the split.

What we do not do

We are not a lesson facility. We will describe what your stroke is doing because equipment decisions depend on it, but we do not teach a method or try to change your motion. If a fitting surfaces something a coach should look at, we say so and step back.

We also do not sell clubs we did not fit. There is no rack of boxed sets by the door. Every club that leaves here was measured for the person carrying it out, which is slower, and correct.
