The club you use forty times a round, measured like it matters

A tour bag gets its putter fitted with a camera, a surface reading and a week of trial. An amateur usually gets a rack, a carpet strip and a feeling. The gap between those two experiences is larger than the gap in the equipment itself, and it is the gap this room exists to close.

What gets measured

Six variables come out of the session, and they are not independent — changing one moves at least two others. That interdependence is exactly why a rack-and-carpet fitting so often fails: it adjusts a single number in isolation and calls it a result.

Face rotation through the stroke

How many degrees the face opens going back and closes coming through, measured between two fixed marks rather than eyeballed. This is the primary number. Almost every other decision in the room gets made in relation to it.

Arc width

How far the head travels inside the target line at the top of the backstroke, taken from overhead footage on a ten foot putt. A narrow arc and a wide arc want different head weights and different hosel geometry, and both are perfectly good strokes.

Balance point and toe hang

The head is balanced on a pivot and the angle the face sits at is recorded in degrees, not described as "half shaft" or "full toe". Two putters advertised with identical toe hang can measure eleven degrees apart once you actually put them on the pivot.

Sole contact and lie

Sole tape shows where the putter is genuinely resting at impact. A lie that is too upright walks the ball left of the aim line even when the stroke is clean, and players compensate with an open-face grip that then leaks the odd putt right.

Length and eye position

Set by where your eyes fall relative to the ball at a comfortable posture, not by height. Tall players routinely need shorter putters than they expect, because the useful variable is torso length and arm hang, not stature.

Effective loft at impact

Shaft lean varies wildly between players. Static loft on the head is only the starting point; what matters is the loft the ball actually sees, which determines how quickly it stops skidding and starts rolling.

How the roll room is set up

Twenty-two feet of calibrated surface, read with a stimp meter every Monday before the first appointment and logged. An overhead camera on a fixed mount so frames from different sessions are genuinely comparable. A fixed aim line laser we can switch on and off, because half the useful information comes from what your stroke does when nothing is guiding it.

We run the session at two speeds. The surface gets set fast for one block and slower for another, because a putter that only works at one green speed is not a putter, it is a coincidence. Central Kentucky greens swing several feet on the stimp between April and August, and your equipment should survive both ends of that.

What tends to come out of it

The most common finding, by a wide margin, is a putter that is too long and too upright. It is the default combination sold at retail because it suits an average that almost nobody actually is. The second most common is a head whose toe hang demands more face rotation than the player's stroke naturally produces, which forces a hold-off through impact and shows up as pushed short putts.

Roughly one session in five ends with us shortening and bending the putter you already own, adding a grip, and charging you for an hour of bench time. That is a perfectly good outcome. The head you have bonded with is worth keeping if the geometry can be made to fit.

Treat this as the first guess we throw away. The table gets a player into a sensible bracket within ten minutes; the remaining eighty minutes are spent finding out where they actually sit, which is frequently one row off.
