The sixteen questions the phone brings us most
Answered the way we would answer them on the phone, which is to say without hedging and occasionally against our own commercial interest.
Why do you start with the putter instead of the driver?
Because a putter that fights your stroke creates compensations, and those compensations do not stay on the green. If we fit your irons first, we are fitting a swing that is already bending itself around a bad short club. Starting at the hole means every later measurement is taken on a player who is not compensating for something we have not looked at yet.
I am a beginner. Is a fitting a waste of money at my level?
It depends what you are asking for. A full bag rebuild for somebody who has played six rounds is premature. A spec audit on whatever set you were given, plus a lie adjustment and correctly sized grips, is one of the best value hours in golf at any level. Beginners are actually the most likely to be playing clubs that are wildly wrong, because they inherited them.
Do I have to buy clubs from you?
No, and a meaningful share of sessions end with no purchase. You leave with the spec card and the recommendation either way. If you want to take those numbers and have the work done elsewhere, the card contains everything another builder would need.
How long does a session take?
Between seventy-five minutes and two hours depending on the room. A full bag rebuild is four visits spread over two or three weeks, because we want you to play between them rather than deciding everything in one afternoon.
What should I bring?
The clubs you play, including the ones you have stopped trusting. Your normal golf shoes, because posture changes with the sole. Your usual ball if you are loyal to a model. And a rough note of which shots annoy you most, which is more useful to us than a handicap number.
Should I hit balls at the range beforehand?
Please do not. We want a normal warm-up, not a tired swing. Arrive as you would arrive at a first tee.
Can you fit me if I have an injury or a physical limitation?
Frequently that is the whole reason someone books. Post-surgery shoulders, restricted hip rotation, arthritis in the hands and back conditions all change what specification works. We fit the player in front of us. We are not medical practitioners and we will not push you past what your physiotherapist has said.
What if my current clubs turn out to be fine?
Then we tell you so and charge for the session. It happens regularly. We would rather lose a component sale than sell you a set to justify our own fee.
How is fitting indoors valid when I play outdoors?
The measurements that decide a fitting — lie at impact, strike location, face rotation, sole contact — do not care about weather. Carry distance does, which is why we chart carry rather than total, note the conditions on the card, and run the short bay on real cut turf instead of only on a mat.
Do you teach as well?
No. We will describe what your motion is doing because equipment decisions depend on it, but we do not teach a method. If a fitting surfaces something a coach should address, we will say so and step out of the way.
How long does a build take?
Five to nine days for components on the wall. Seven to twelve for a standard order. Three to six weeks for anything genuinely rare. You get the lead time before you commit, not after.
Is the fitting fee credited against a purchase?
Yes, if the build happens here within ninety days. One fee, one credit. A four-visit rebuild credits its full fee against a bag build rather than crediting each visit separately.
Can you work on clubs you did not sell me?
Yes. Bending, reshafting, regripping, weight correction and spec audits are all available on any club, including heads bought second-hand or online. We inspect for damage and previous bend history first and will tell you if a head is unlikely to survive the work.
Do you fit juniors?
Yes, and we price it as bench work rather than as a full fitting, because a growing player will need it redone. The usual pattern is cutting down and reweighting an existing set every twelve to eighteen months, which is far cheaper than replacing clubs.
Do you carry left-handed components?
Heads for left-handed players are stocked more thinly across the industry generally, so our wall reflects that. We can order almost anything; expect a longer lead time. Tell us when booking so we prepare the right trial clubs.
Do you take walk-ins?
Not for fittings. One player is in the building at a time so the roll room stays quiet and the readings stay comparable. Quick bench work — a regrip, a lie adjustment — can often be done same day if you call ahead.
