Last on the list, and quicker because of it
By the time a driver session starts, we already know your grip pressure, your release timing, how much face rotation you naturally produce and how you respond to a change in shaft weight. All of that came out of the earlier rooms. What is left is a small number of decisions, and they get made in about an hour.
The three numbers, and the one nobody talks about
Launch angle, spin rate and ball speed are the familiar trio, and any competent shop will show you all three. The fourth number is where the ball actually starts relative to your target, and it matters more than the other three for most golfers, because a 285 yard drive in the trees is worth less than 255 in the short grass.
We chart dispersion as an ellipse, not an average. A driver that produces a slightly shorter mean carry with half the left-right spread is the better club, and the launch monitor summary screen will never tell you that on its own.
Face angle and the shape you already own
Every driver head has a built-in face angle at address, and the adjustable hosels that appear to offer infinite freedom actually trade loft against face angle in a fixed relationship. Turning a hosel to close the face adds loft. Opening it removes loft. There is no free adjustment.
The practical implication is that you should choose a head whose neutral setting already suits your shape, and reserve the hosel for fine tuning. A head fighting your natural curve at its default position will need a setting that ruins its launch window.
Loft is not the enemy
The most persistent piece of bad folklore in golf is that a low-lofted driver goes further. For the great majority of amateur clubhead speeds, adding loft adds carry, because it raises launch more than it raises spin. Players who have spent years in an eight and a half degree head frequently gain fifteen yards moving to ten and a half, and lose nothing they will miss.
We do not argue about this. We put both in your hands, take a proper sample, and show you the chart. The chart wins the argument more reliably than any explanation.
Shaft weight before flex label
Weight changes tempo and sequencing. Flex label changes almost nothing you can feel, because the labels are not standardised between makers and rarely match the frequency reading on our bench.
The order we work in is weight, then bend profile, then length, then the printed flex — and by the time the first three are settled the fourth has usually decided itself.
Length, and the case for cutting it
Stock driver length has crept upward for years because a longer club shows better on a robot. A human hits the centre less often. Most players in this bay end up somewhere between 44.5 and 45.25 inches, which is shorter than what they walked in with, and their carry goes up rather than down because centre strikes beat swing arc.
Cutting a driver also raises frequency and lowers swing weight, so a shortened build usually needs a tip weight to feel right again. That is bench work, and it is included.

Windows, not targets. Attack angle shifts all of these, and a player who hits up on the ball can live happily outside every row in the table.
