Effective loft around the green, from putter to wedge

There is a number stamped on the sole of your wedge and a number in the catalogue entry for your putter. Neither of them describes what the ball experiences. What the ball experiences is the angle of the face at the moment of contact, which depends on where your hands are relative to the head, and that varies more between golfers than almost anything else we measure.

This note runs the argument from the putter outward, because the effect is easiest to see on a green and the principle carries all the way to a full wedge.

Start with the putter, where nobody looks

Putters are built with two to four degrees of loft. The reason is that a ball at rest sits very slightly down in the grass, and a face with a small amount of loft lifts it out of that depression so it can begin rolling rather than bouncing.

Now consider two players with the same three degree putter. One presses the hands ahead of the ball at address by an inch and a half. The other has the shaft dead vertical, or even leaning slightly back.

The first player delivers something close to zero effective loft. The ball gets driven down into the turf, hops, and skids for a long way before it starts rolling. On a slow surface that is barely noticeable. On a fast one the ball takes so long to settle that direction is compromised in the first three feet.

The second player delivers four or five degrees, which pops the ball slightly and produces its own version of the same problem, though usually a less damaging one.

Two players, identical putters, and the ball is doing completely different things in the first eighteen inches of its journey.

Measuring the skid

On the roll surface we mark a start point and watch, on video, where the ball transitions from skidding to true rolling. It is visible if you know what to look for — the ball stops sliding and the dimples begin turning consistently.

A well-matched putter and player will have the ball rolling within roughly four to seven percent of the total putt length. Badly matched, we have measured skid running past fifteen percent, which means on a twenty foot putt the ball spends three feet doing something unpredictable before it settles onto the line you chose.

The fix is loft, and it is a bending job on the putter's hosel, not a purchase. Players who press the hands forward want more static loft to compensate; players with a neutral or trailing shaft want less.

Now the chip shot

The same logic, larger numbers. A fifty-six degree wedge delivered with four inches of forward shaft lean is behaving like something in the high forties. The player who does this and cannot work out why their chips run out ten feet past the hole is not being let down by the club.

The reverse case exists too. A player who scoops, adding loft through impact, turns a fifty-six into a sixty-two and then wonders why the ball comes up short and spins sideways off the bunker lip.

Neither is a technique fault we would try to correct. They are simply different deliveries, and each of them implies a different set of stamped lofts across the wedges. A strong shaft leaner should very likely be carrying more loft on paper than the standard set makeup would suggest, and the gaps between their wedges should be tighter because each degree of static loft buys them less.

How this reshapes a wedge set

Take a player who consistently leans the shaft hard forward. On the standard advice they carry 50, 54 and 58 degrees. Delivered, those might be behaving like 44, 48 and 52 — which leaves a large hole at the very top of their short game, where they need the ball to stop quickly.

The right answer for them may be 52, 56 and 60, or even a 62 in the bag. The stamped numbers look unusual on a scorecard photograph. The delivered numbers are perfectly conventional.

This is the sort of decision the short bay exists for, and it is the reason we chart carry at three swing lengths for each wedge rather than accepting the manufacturer's gapping logic.

Bounce follows loft

One consequence worth stating explicitly. Leaning the shaft forward does not only remove loft; it also raises the leading edge relative to the trailing edge, which effectively adds bounce. A steep, shaft-leaning player is therefore delivering less loft and more bounce simultaneously, and both of those push toward the same outcome: a low, running shot that resists digging.

That combination is excellent from a firm August fairway and dreadful from a lush April lie where the extra bounce makes the club skip into the middle of the ball. It is one of the clearest cases we see for splitting bounce across a wedge set rather than buying three clubs from the same grind family.

What to do with this

Photograph yourself at impact, or have somebody film a chip shot from face on. If your hands are well ahead of the ball, you are playing less loft than you think across your whole short game, putter included. That is not a fault. It is a specification requirement nobody has told you about.
