Reading sole wear to find a putter's lie
Turn your putter over. If you have played it for a couple of seasons, the sole has a story written on it in scuffs, and it is a more honest account of your address position than anything you will remember about how you stand.
Before any measuring device comes out in a fitting, this is the first thing we look at. It takes four seconds and it usually predicts what the gauge is about to say.
What the patterns mean
Wear concentrated toward the toe
The putter is too upright for you, or too long, and usually both. The heel is sitting off the ground at address, so only the toe end of the sole is touching. This is by a comfortable margin the most common pattern we see, and it is a direct consequence of retail putters being built long and upright to suit an average.
Wear concentrated toward the heel
The putter is too flat, or you are standing further from the ball than the club's geometry expects. Less common than toe wear, but it shows up in taller players who bought a putter that somebody helpfully bent flat for them without measuring first.
Even wear across the sole
The lie fits your address position, at least statically. Enjoy it. It is not the majority case.
Wear at the leading edge only
You are pressing the hands forward at address and delivering the club with the shaft leaning. That changes effective loft as well as contact, and it means the lie reading should be taken dynamically rather than from a soled position.
No wear at all
Either the putter is new, or you hover it at address and never sole it. Hovering is a legitimate technique and it means we have to get the lie from footage instead.
Why lie matters more on a putter than people think
The usual assumption is that lie angle is an iron problem. The face is nearly vertical on a putter, so a lie error cannot tilt the loft plane much, and the ball is not going far enough for a small directional error to compound.
Both of those are true, and lie still matters, for a different reason: aim.
A putter that is too upright sits with the toe in the air. The topline and the sightline on the crown are therefore not sitting in the plane the designer intended, and the alignment aid points somewhere slightly different from where it appears to. Players compensate by aiming the body left or right, and because that compensation is built at address rather than during the stroke, it is extremely stable and completely invisible.
The ball starts on line, the player is convinced their aim is fine, and the putter has been quietly rotating their whole setup for two years.
The second effect is contact height. A toe-down putter meets the ball slightly higher on the face than a flat-soled one, which changes launch and how quickly the ball begins rolling. On a fast green that is the difference between a putt that dies at the hole and one that runs three feet by.
Turning wear into a number
The wear tells us where to look. The measurement comes from three sources, and we want at least two of them to agree.
- Static gauge. The club soled flat on the lie board, read against a protractor. Fast, repeatable, and only describes the club rather than the player.
- Sole tape on the surface. A strip of impact tape across the sole and ten putts on the roll surface. The mark shows where contact is actually occurring under a real stroke.
- Address photograph. Taken from directly down the line at eye height, with a reference line on the floor. Shows what the player sees and whether the topline is level.
Where the static reading and the tape disagree, the tape wins. A player who sets up with the toe down but rotates the shaft during the stroke can produce a much flatter delivered lie than the soled position suggests, and the delivered figure is the one that matters.
The correction is usually cheap
Most putter lie problems are solved with a bending bar and about ten minutes. Steel putter hosels bend readily and hold their setting. Two degrees flatter is a routine adjustment; four is possible on most heads; beyond that the neck geometry starts to fight and we would rather look at a different head.
What often accompanies the bend is a length change, because the two are related. Flattening the lie moves the head further from the body at a given posture, and shortening the club brings it back. Doing one without considering the other is how players end up with a putter that measures correctly and still feels wrong.
A quick check at home
Put a strip of masking tape across the sole, go putt for twenty minutes on a practice green, then look at where the tape has picked up grass and dirt. It is not a measurement, but if the mark is all at one end, you have learned something useful for the price of a piece of tape.
A player once brought in a putter so worn on the toe that the finish was gone in a crescent. He had been playing it for eleven years and had never turned it over.
